Visual COBOL Developer, Jacksonville, FL

We are looking for a Visual COBOL Developer for a direct hire position located in Jacksonville, FL.

Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Visual COBOL Developer to join our team in supporting and modernizing our legacy COBOL-based systems. In this role, you will work with Visual COBOL integrated into Visual Studio or Eclipse IDE to enhance, maintain, and troubleshoot critical applications. You will collaborate with business analysts and other developers to ensure that our COBOL systems meet the evolving needs of the organization while providing high levels of reliability and scalability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Development and Maintenance: Write, test, and debug COBOL programs using Visual COBOL tools and technologies.
• Modernization: Support efforts to modernize legacy COBOL applications, ensuring they integrate with modern technologies and platforms.
• Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, testers, and architects, to design and implement effective solutions.
• Performance Tuning: Analyze system performance and optimize COBOL code for better efficiency, scalability, and response time.
• System Integration: Integrate COBOL applications with modern systems, including web services, databases, and APIs.
• Documentation: Create and maintain clear, concise technical documentation related to system design, application logic, and troubleshooting procedures.
• Support and Troubleshooting: Provide support for production systems, addressing issues, and delivering fixes in a timely manner.
• Code Review: Participate in code reviews to maintain high-quality standards in development.

Qualifications:

• Proven experience in COBOL programming (ideally Visual COBOL with Micro Focus or similar tools).
• Strong understanding of legacy systems and how to modernize them using modern tools like Visual Studio, Eclipse, and web technologies.
• Experience with COBOL integration into relational databases (e.g., DB2, Oracle, or SQL Server).
• Familiarity with SOA, web services, and other integration protocols.
• Proficiency in source control systems like Git or SVN.
• Familiarity with development methodologies such as Agile or Scrum
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Knowledge of mainframe systems and related tools is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience working in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, Azure) and integrating COBOL applications in cloud-native architectures.
• Familiarity with modern development practices like CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps.
• Insurance industry experience.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in COBOL development.
• 3+ years of experience in a Visual COBOL environment.
